Three of the world’s top vineyards have been named in South Australia!

Once again, South Australia has hit the spotlight.

Online listing World’s Best Vineyards has released their list of this year’s top vineyards across the globe, and named just three Australian vineyards in the top 50 — and, by no surprise to us, they all reside in SA.

The top 50 vineyards are pooled from over 600 nominations, judged by sommeliers, wine journalists and lovers of wine that judge the best all-round wine experiences.

Chances are, you’ve heard of these SA staples before — and if you haven’t visited them yet, here’s your chance to book in, visit, taste, and show your state pride!

1. HENSCHKE

One of Australia’s oldest family-owned wineries, state treasure Henschke was listed as No.25 on the annual list.

Fifth-generation winemaker Stephen Henschke, and his viticulturist wife Prue, are recognised around the world for their exceptional quality wines, innovation and sustainability in the vineyard.

The combination of biodynamic and traditional winemaking methods produce white’s with absolute purity and red’s that have a strong sense of place. Prue’s efforts in replacing inorganic fertilisers (and herbicides) with compost and manure and eggshells has enriched the soil to raise the quality of the wine produced.

Henschke was also awarded Halliday Wine Companion ‘Winery of the Year’ earlier this year.

Running for over 150 years, Stephen and Prue recently welcomed sixth-generation family members, Johann, Justine and Andreas, into the family business.

You can find Henschke at 1428 Keyneton Rd, Keyneton SA 5353.

2. D’ARENBERG

Have you got an Instagram photo at D’Arenberg yet? If not, it’s one of those places you just have to see for yourself.

It’s no secret that with the Cube and its stunning views of McLaren Vale, D’arenberg is one of the premier winery destinations in SA. Not only that, the Cube itself has been awarded for design innovation in the past.

As one of the most talked about pieces of architecture in South Australia and tourism alike, it’s little wonder. We are certainly awe-struck by the design.

Located in McLaren Vale, South Australia, the d’Arenberg Cube is a AUD$15million glass-encased steel and concrete structure that sits five stories high, in the middle of a vineyard.

The cube inspired architectural puzzle is four modules wide, four high and four deep, with the illusion of floating above the ground floor entrance.

The top two floors, housing a restaurant and the winery’s cellar door, are turned askew, rotated on their axis, with each floor offering 360 degrees views of the region.

Described in the annual list as “the Willy Wonka of Wines”, this SA staple, just 45 minutes from Adelaide, made it to No.31 on the list.

Escape to D’Arenberg at Osborn Rd, McLaren Vale SA 5171.

3. PENFOLDS MAGILL ESTATE

Last but certainly not least, Penfold’s Magill Estate was dubbed “the giant of Australian Wine”, coming in at No.37 on the list.

An iconic staple both in Australian and internationally, their 1951 vintage recently became one of the most expensive Australian wines ever to be told at auction, at $142,131.

Venturing a mere 8km from the CBD, you can enjoy a remarkable brunch in Magill Kitchen, fine dining in Magill Restaurant, or a tour through the underground cellars and cottages, all whilst looking over the vineyard and Adelaide beyond.

You can find Penfolds Magill Estate at 78 Penfold Rd, Adelaide SA 5072.
